Timeline of significant events in the life of Maillardville

 

1890-   Ross/McLaren Mill on the Fraser River

1903-   Ownership changes, mill known as Fraser River Mills

1905-   Name changes to Fraser River Lumber Company

1907-   Millside School built

        -   Fraser River is dredged, deep water access provided

        -   Consortium headed by A.D McCrae buys Fraser River Lumber Company

1908-   Town site of Millside now known as Fraser Mills

1909-   First contingent of French Canadians

1910-   Second contingent of French Canadians

        -   First Church at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish

        -   Company changes name to Canadian Western Lumber Company

1912-   French Settlement granted a post office under the name of Maillardville

1913-   Church burns down

        -   Port Coquitlam and Fraser Mills secedes from Coquitlam and incorporates

        -   Temporary Municipal offices located at the home of E Pare 

1914-   WWI begins

1917-   Les Dames de St. Anne founded

1918-   WWI ends

1920-   New City Hall at Marmont and Brunette

1929-   Start of Great Depression; leads to new wave of French Canadians from western
            provinces
1931-   Strike at Fraser Mills

1938-   Present day Church consecrated at Notre Dame de Lourdes Parish

1939-   WWII begins

1940-   Coquitlam's first May Day

1944-   Fraser Mills donates the land south of Brunette to create Mackin Park

1945-   WWII ends

        -   Federation Canadienne Francaise de Colombie Britanique founded.

        -   First "Frenchman's Frolic" 

1946-   New French parish of Notre Dame de Fatima founded

        -   Caisse Populaire de N.D. de Lourdes founded

        -   c1946 "Teen Town" is organised

1948-   Fraser River Floods

        -   c1948 Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) is organised

1950-   Caisse Populaire changes its name to “Caisse Populaire de Maillardville”

1951-   Catholic School strike in Maillardville

        -   Sisters of the Child Jesus leave after serving the community for 42 years

1952-   Schools reopen

1955-   Scouts de Maillardville founded

1957-   Mouvement de Guide Catholique founded
1958-   New Church at Fatima consecrated

1959-   50th Anniverary of founding of Maillardville

1963-   Société Biculturelle de Maillardville founded

1966-   Death of Father Edmond Maillard 
            
Branch 86/ Club Bel Age founded

1969-   Foyer Maillard opens

1972-   Fraser Mills becomes a part of Coquitlam
            Place des Arts opens

1973-   Les Echos du Pacifique (choral) founded
1974-   First attempt at Maillardville revitalization

1977-   Francofête in Maillardville

1979-   Place Maillardville Community Centre built

          - Maillardville Uni founded ( incorporated 1983)

1984-   75th Anniversary of founding of Maillardville

          - Societe Maillardville Uni organises anniversary events

          - Anniversary activities includes a conference on the state of affairs in Maillardville

          - Various recommendations to support french community are outlined at conference

1985-   Second attempt at Maillardville revitalization

          - Maillardville Shopping Centre burns down
1990-   First annual Festival du Bois

             -   Caisse Populaire changes name to “Village Credit Union”

             -  Village CU opens a branch in Port Moody

1998-   City Hall abandons its historic location at Brunette and Marmont to
             relocate at the new "Town Centre"
1999-   Heritage Square completed: Place des Arts, Mackin House, Railway Museum 

2000-   Place Maillardville expansion
            - Village Credit Union opens a branch in Port Coquitlam

2001-   Fraser Mills ceases operations
2002-   Village Credit Union opens a branch in Chilliwack

2005-   Village CU sells assets to VanCity CU…end of a significant aspect of life in
             Maillardville

        -   Maillardville Residents’ Association founded (incorporates 2006)

2006-  Third attempt at Maillardville revitalization

2008-   Société Maillardville Uni changes name to “Société francophone de
            Maillardville”

          -   Beedie group, owners of the Fraser Mills site will develop as the “Village at
               Fraser Mills
          - After 17 years Festival du Bois returns to Mackin Park          

2009-   Bonne Fête Maillardville!!!----Happy Birthday Maillardville!!!
